I remember this story having more in the way of prostitutes and black comedy in THE PRESIDENT'S LAST BANG. Kidding aside, this is a pretty fair example of a movie that takes a bunch of facts and stitches them together in the way that most resembles a thriller. The suspense comes from the pieces of history where one doesn't know the exact details, meaning the most exciting set piece is in the middle rather than the end. No mystery, but at least some tension. Lee Byung-Hun shoulders most of that. We know what this guy is going to do from the start, but he conveys the pain of seeing things fall apart nicely, along with the anguish of apparently still having a bit of a conscience after years of bad deeds. Plus a bit of "ruthless survivor", lefty the audience start liking this guy too much. If you like political thrillers, go see this. You don't need to know any of the facts. It’s a great political thriller based on real events of south Korea’s dictator coming out of power in the early 70s I believe. The main guy was a great actor and the whole movie I kept thinking of his character as “very stoic and stressed”. The movie pieces together at the end very well. And I feel more globally informed now. The events in this film were significant parts of south Korea’s history.  On a side tangent, I was surprised how much of the movie was filmed in the United States and how there were allusions to stuff like Abraham Lincoln… This review may contain spoilers.
