Having suffered through the painfully pretentious and shallow, pseudo-Lynchian mess of Perfect Blue, I was understandably skeptical about watching another film by Satoshi Kon (I have not yet seen Millennium Actress, but am now quite intrigued to do so. Tokyo Godfathers (a title which at first struck me as belonging most probably to a pseudo-psychological mafia thriller) was not only a pleasant surprise; it was the best anime feature I've seen in many years, probably since Ghost in the Shell, excluding anything by Hayao Miyazaki. Like the classic Grave of the Fireflies, Tokyo Godfathers struck me as unusual in the fact that it draws much from European cinema – English, Irish, German or Italian – while most commercial anime features try to mimic American film-making. But while Grave of the Fireflies was painfully sad and bleak, Tokyo Godfathers is irresistibly charming, and manages to be funny and incredibly touching at once like few anime films – few animated films, at that – ever achieve. Tokyo Godfathers is remarkably non-violent, as pacifistic perhaps as Miyazaki's films. You won't find any grand futuristic structures or fantastical creatures here; in fact, the animation may seem crude at first. But the characters are where the film really hits its mark. Kon triumphs, like in his excellent series Paranoia Agent, by not succumbing to the accepted prototypes and standards of how characters should look in an anime film; the lead characters in the film are all gorgeously ugly, in a way that even Miyazaki had not yet dared to do. Even the child character, Miyuki, is chubby, and not cute and beautiful in the way little girls 'should' be, by the unwritten laws of anime. Thus, Kon's characters are believable and true to life; they are three anti-heroes, outcasts from society, each running away from their pasts. Especially charming is Hana (AKA 'Uncle Bag. the golden-hearted transvestite, who supplies much of the film's comic relief but also some of its most touching moments. Tokyo Godfathers – despite some far-fetched but amusing plot twists and coincidences – is at its core a very simple story, a beautiful little story about family, love and friendship. Few anime films are so unpretending; and thus, few anime films manage to be so strong. Watch Tokyo Godfathers; you'll laugh, you'll cry. And believe you me, ten minutes into it you'll forget it was ever animated. His debut, ‘Pafekuto Buru’ was a psychological thriller that would have made Hitchcock smile. His follow-up, ‘Sennen Joyu’, is a touching period drama invested with more empathy than most films. And then there’s the jaw-droppingly trippy ‘Papurika’, which is challenging but satisfying. Meanwhile, ‘Tokyo Goddofazazu’, his third picture, is his most accessible. Inspired by Peter B. Kyne’s novel ‘Three Godfathers’, it’s a quirky dramedy that follows three homeless people as they try to track down the parents of a newborn girl that they found on the street on Christmas Eve. Though it’s a lot of elements to coordinate, Kon managed to strike the perfect balance between all the parts, which is an astonishing achievement. One would be hard-pressed to find many other pictures that are as successful at blending humour, melancholy, warmth, mystery and thrills. And a touch of magic. Our trio is also a great balancing act: Gin is an alcoholic former cyclist who left the spotlight after failing to secure the medical help his daughter required; he’s gruff and implacable. Hana is a drag queen who is secretly in love with Gin and who dreams of being a mother; he’s emotional and very loyal. Miyuki is a rebellious young woman who’s run away from home following a familial conflict; she’s sullen and antisocial. They’re quite the cocktail. And yet, they’re genuinely affecting. The plot is developed in a fairly contrived fashion, which one mustn’t challenge in order to truly enjoy the picture, but Kon connected its threads in clever ways; as our “Tokyo Godfathers” scour the city for clues leading them to Kiyoki’s family, every encounter or incident takes them a step further on their investigation – and in their personal journeys, as their own individual past histories are gradually explored and eventually resolved. What’s remarkable about this picture is how it humanizes the homeless without pitying them: it serves up various different motivations and concerns for all of its characters and illustrates quite well the challenges that they face as the perceived dregs of society. And, in the process, it also explores our collective perceptions of family values and familial connections – in ‘Tokyo Goddofazazu’, no family is a picture-perfect “traditional” one. Much as in real life. Though Kon would peak with his next film, his swan song ‘Papurika’, the animation here is also superb. The characters express themselves in mildly cartoony ways, but their motion is realistic enough – and the rest looks life-like. As we visit all over Tokyo, we get to see it through our trio’s eyes, and the backgrounds look very good. Unfortunately, they have a 2D quality to them, but the falling snow sort of adds a third dimension to them. The picture ends on an exciting note, with a riotous chase featuring a stolen truck, a kidnapped baby and a taxi. It’s funny, it’s exciting, it’s wholly entertaining – and, unlike many chases, it doesn’t outlast its welcome. It all wraps up with a stunning rooftop freefall and landing that Kon made beautiful, slowing it down in such a way that he was not only easing his character, but also his audience. He fashioned it into a magical moment. The kind you can only find at Christmas. ‘Tokyo Goddofazazu’ is masterful storytelling. It finds Satoshi Kon at the height of his powers, taking his audience on all sorts of twists that are equally dramatic and hilarious. Here he struck such a fine balance that the picture never lulls, never bores, never feels off-kilter. Were the animation just a touch stronger, this would likely be a genuine masterpiece. He gives them Sachiko's address, but the party is interrupted when a maid, revealed to be a Latin American hitman in disguise, attempts to shoot the bride's father. The hitman kidnaps Miyuki and the baby and takes them back to his home. There, Miyuki befriends the hitman's wife and shows her some pictures of her family. This strikes me as a movie you will either accept whole-heartedly or trash whole-heartedly. It is shamelessly sentimental and is built on a series of absurd coincidences, but the amazing thing is it all works. The coincidences could feel like a shameless plot device but instead there is just a sense of wonderful magic, as though somehow the foundling the movie is built around lives an oddly charmed existence that transforms the lives of those around it.
The movie does a wonderful job of making its characters both broad but human. This is not one of those cheesy movies that make homeless people seem ultimately wiser and nobler than the rest of us, but while they are all deeply flawed they all have a redeeming warmth.
The movie is both very funny and very touching, and is really about the miracle of love in a world of harsh realities. If you're not willing to totally suspend your disbelief and give in to the movie's blatant flouting of all concepts of reality then you'll probably hate it, but if you want a charming fable this is a great choice.

Anyway, as always a brilliant analysis, the way you construct the discurse, the visuals and music has me in awe. I can see all the amount of work and heart you put in your videos. Tokyo Godfathers is one of my favorite movies ever, I have a little tradition to watch it every christmas morning. Thank you for the 57 minute ride, I immensely enjoyed it.
